MPs threaten to impeach Trade CS Moses Kuria over importation of GMO maize
Members of Parliament from maize-growing regions have threatened to impeach the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade, and Enterprise Development Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria if he proceeds with the plan to import maize.
The MPs led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargai opposed the importation of maize saying it will further disenfranchise maize farmers. The over 30 parliamentarians drawn from North and South Rift regions were addressing the media at the Parliament buildings.
“It seems there is a deliberate move to continue killing maize farming in this country,” said Cherargei.
Pokot South MP David Pkosing threatened to begin to collect signatures to impeach Kuria if he proceeds with the importation of maize. He urged Kuria to immediately stop the importation of maize, whether it is genetically modified or not.
“Kuria should not even think of importing even a single bag of maize between now and February 2023. That’s when we will know if there is a need to import or not because all maize will have been collected from farmers,” Pkosing said.
The livid legislators questioned the move to import maize while local farmers have begun to harvest the product.
He added, “It has never happened before that maize is imported into the country during the harvest season. We understand that local maize production is always our first remedy.”
Kuria said the government will allow the importation of 10 million bags of GMO maize in the next six months to address the current shortage of the product, which has kept the price of flour at an all-time high.
The MPs raised alarm over reports of a maize consignment received at the Mombasa Port, saying there was no cabinet approval for its importation.
“We want to know why ships are already docking in Mombasa port without the laid down legal procedures in place,” asked Cherargai.
While speaking to NTV’s Sydney Chazima, Marakwet West MP, Timothy Toroitich has sworn to head to court if the government does not address their concerns over the importation of genetically modified maize.
“If our demands are not met, we will head to court seeking a prohibition order to stop the importation of maize; The interest of the farmer must come first,” he said.
