MPs accused of dragging feet on probing NHIF fraud payout
The National Assembly’s portfolio committee on health, which set itself a target of 90 days to probe alleged fraudulent claims for NHIF funds by some private hospitals, has barely scratched the surface after almost 48 days.
On Tuesday, when the implicated hospitals were due to appear before the Robert Pukose-led team, the committee adjourned its sitting, citing late receipt of documents and responses.
As representatives of the Jekim Medical Centre took the hot seat, it emerged that committee members had not seen the documents to be used and that some responses had only just been sent to committee members, leading to discussions about adjourning the meeting.
In the end, the committee adjourned.
But even as the Committee adjourned yet again without having accomplished much for the day, questions were raised about the slow pace at which the Committee appeared to be conducting the inquiry.
When it began its meetings in July, the committee said this was an investigation that would be conducted and concluded within 90 days, but some 48 days later, no substantive action has been taken.
NTV has learnt of intense backroom moments in which some committee members felt that the inquiry had begun to fade into the background, despite the fact that it was a matter that had attracted the attention of the entire country. However, Committee chairman Robert Pukose allayed fears of compromise.
