MP Pkosing grilled over ‘inciting Facebook post’
Pokot South MP David Pkosing was Tuesday grilled for six hours by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives over incitement allegations.
Mr Pkosing was accompanied by his supporters, his lawyer Jackson Kimani, and a section of members of the West Pokot County Assembly, arriving at Kapenguria Police station at 10:57am where the questioning happened.
The rebel MP who is a lone ranger in President William Ruto’s backyard has lately softened his hard stance against the Head of State and has hinted at reuniting with his former ally – President Ruto.
Before the arrest, the MP had posted on his Facebook page alleging that Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers had taken away 100 cows belonging to members of his community and killed them. He further claimed that the soldiers had in a previous incident bombed and killed civilians.
Early last year, the legislator was arrested in connection with banditry in the region. His helicopter was also seized for forensic analysis by the DCI.
The MP has termed his grilling and summons as purely political. His lawyer defended him saying his Facebook post was not meant to incite but an expression of his concerns as a representative of the people.
Lawyer Kimani claimed the MP was a recognized champion of peace, and that his post was meant to draw attention to the pressing issues affecting the people living along the border of West Pokot and Turkana County.
The lawyer said concerning the incident highlighted by the MP in his social media post, spent cartridges believed to be from KDF officers were recovered and submitted as evidence to Kapenguria police station for analysis.
“The animals have bullet wounds. I want to tell the government I won’t be intimidated when I raise issues concerning my people,” the MP said on Tuesday after the grilling, accusing Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale of orchestrating his arrest.
Leader of Majority at the West Pokot County Assembly Martin Komongiro criticized the government for its silence on the alleged animal massacres. He defended Mr Pkosing saying he only submitted crucial information to Mr Duale for investigation and called for calm as the inquiry unfolds.
CCIO George Mutonya explained that the MP’s Facebook post could potentially breed discontent between the Pokots and their neighbors, and urged leaders to refrain from making inflammatory remarks that could aggravate tensions among the general public.
“According to us, the words posted can bring discontent between Pokots and neighbors. We asked him to come and explain to us what he meant. The investigations are ongoing and as of now,” the detective explained.
Pkosing’s supporters carried placards in solidarity with the MP, camping outside Kapenguria police station as they awaited the outcome of the grilling.
