Kitui East Mp Nimrod Mbai has presented himself at Kitengela police station following assault of a Kenya Power engineer.
Mbai is on the spot for slapping a Kenya Power engineer who was reportedly seeking to disconnect an illegal power line at the legislator’s home in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
He is set to be arraigned in Kajiado law court today, Wednesday, July 5.
In a now-viral video doing rounds on social media, the MP can be seen hurling insults at the Kenya Power officers before repeatedly slapping one of them during the incident which took place on Monday.
The MP is also seen reaching for and attempting to draw his gun during his fit of rage.
In response to the incident, agitated KPLC workers held a peaceful protest from the company offices in Epza to Kitengela police station condemning the incident.
It is alleged that the visit by the power workers had been prompted by an outcry from the neighborhood where it was reported that electricity had turned dim and faulty. It was allegedly established there was a massive illegal connection to the Mp’s home.
A scuffle ensued when the Mp instead engaged in a verbal altercation with KPLC officers before he physically attacked the company engineer.
The workers say attacks on officials while at work are a common occurrence with some individuals said to defy KPLC regulations and continue utilizing power that is not metered.
They want the government to come out clear on illegal connections citing frustrations by senior government officials who direct them to exempt charges from some users and companies.
The workers are now appealing to the concerned stakeholders to ensure justice is served to the assaulted engineer.
Assorted KPLC materials were recovered at the Mp home after the incident.
The Mp who presented himself at Kitengela police station on Wednesday morning is set to be arraigned in Kajiado law court later in the day.
