MP Jackson Kosgei recounts escaping wrath of protesters in Parliament
Nominated MP Bishop Jackson Kosgei says youths protesting against the Finance Bill, 2024 have a point and it is not too late to do the right thing.
The legislator, who represents Persons With Disabilities and Special Interest Groups, was seen being wheeled by protesters on Tuesday after they forced entry into Parliament buildings.
Due to his condition, the MP and his counterpart Rose Museu sought refuge at the VIP lounge at Parliament buildings because the evacuation route that the other legislators used was not friendly to wheelchair users.
“In the face of hunger, the youths who gained entry into Parliament found me and my colleague and they claimed that they know me. The question of how I voted on the Finance Bill was not an issue at this point and they said that I am a good man all the same,” he recalled.
“They said they wanted to help me out because what might happen was not something good and so they escorted us out with my colleague Museu who was also walking with the aid of crutches out of Parliament buildings,” he recalled the encounter with the angry protestors, who spared their lives.
The legislator now says the youths who are opposed and protesting against the Finance Bill are genuine and should be listened to.
“They are our children and the anger that came in, I pray that it is not hijacked by anything else. They are genuine and they need to be listened to,” he stated in Baringo on Thursday.
The Bishop noted that after the protests, President William Ruto in his wisdom decided not to sign it, indicating that the law gives him the power to return it to Parliament.
He said things were going in the right direction and appealed to Kenyans to maintain law and order.
“I want to appeal to Kenyans that this is the only country we have and now that the issue that led to misunderstanding has been dropped, I think we as a country should come to a round table and start to build the future we want and listen to our younger people,” said the nominated MP.
The move by the President to reject the Bill, he said, does not invalidate the MPs who supported it, indicating that it was a political experience, which has ups and downs.
“When crisis comes, it doesn’t invalidate people. For now, there is a challenge and it can be handled. It is only a perception that has been created to demonize some legislators. The Finance Bill has never been an easy thing over the years because it is about sharing resources. Notwithstanding how things have gone, it is not too late for anyone to do the right thing,” said the cleric.
He, however, said the Church played its role on the contentious Finance Bill, but they cannot play the role of the opposition.
“When Kenya was declared a one-party state, this country never had an alternative voice to speak on behalf of the people and the church stepped in, and now, a vibrant opposition has been born and it should play its role. The church should play a neutral ground,” he said.
