More pain as govt almost doubles payments for Nairobi Expressway

Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway have been hit with new charges which will see them pay almost double from the usual pay.

According to a Gazette Notice dated December 19, 2023, and signed by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen motorists using the Nairobi Expressway will have to pay higher toll rates.

The new tolls apply to different sections of the expressway and are designed to streamline the toll collection process and support infrastructure development and maintenance.

The government said the new tolls would help finance the ongoing maintenance and operating costs of the infrastructure.

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4B (3) of the Public Roads Toll Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport approves the toll rates for the Nairobi Expressway as set out in the Schedule,” stated the notice.

“The Base Toll Rates may be adjusted as per the CPI and Exchange Rate on and after the Commercial Operation Date.”

Nation tried to reach Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and his communication team but they were incomication, only saying that “we should ignore it.”

Moja Expressway which runs the Chinese-built road that stretches from the western side of the city to the southeastern edge of the metropolis and reportedly records an average daily traffic volume of 80,000 vehicles said that the new toll charges are contained in a notice Gazette Notice dated December 19, 2023, and signed by Transport CS.

According to the the breakdown of the toll charges for different sections of the Nairobi Expressway, the government said that they have increased the charges for using the Nairobi it from the current range of Sh100 to Sh310 to a new range of Sh170 to Sh500 across all the stations along the Mlolongo-Westlands route.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4B (3) of the Public Roads Toll Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport approves the toll rates for the Nairobi Expressway as set out in the Schedule,” stated the notice.

“The Base Toll Rates may be adjusted as per the CPI and Exchange Rate on and after the Commercial Operation Date.”

The government said the new toll charges are meant to help finance the ongoing maintenance and operational costs of the infrastructure.

In the new rates, motorists entering the Expressway on Mlolongo and exiting at the SGR station and the Eastern Bypass will be required to pay Sh250 up from the current Sh100, while those exiting at the Southern Bypass will pay Sh330 up from Sh210.

On the same route, vehicles exiting at Capital Hill and Haile Selassie stations will pay Sh410 up from Sh210.

Exits at Museum Hill, The Mall and Nairobi Westland’s terminus will attract Sh500 rate up from Sh310.

The same rates will also be applicable for motorists travelling through the opposite route from the Nairobi Westlands entry terminus to the Mlolongo exit terminus.

The Sh87 billion, 27.1-kilometer road was financed and built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation under a public-private partnership model.
