Activist Morara Kebaso opens up on his bold 2027 ambition
Morara Kebaso, a government critic who rose to prominence in mid-2024, became widely known for exposing non-existent or stalled government projects while imitating President William Ruto. In an exclusive interview with NTV, Morara opened up about his ambition to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 presidential election.
The 29-year-old activist became an overnight sensation in August 2024 for creating videos while dressed in Kaunda, President Ruto’s favourite suits, and speaking just like the head of state, often addressing audiences through a sunroof.
In these clips, Morara exposed government projects that either do not exist or have since stalled. Since August, he has highlighted over 90 projects across 31 counties, through which over 100 billion shillings have allegedly been misappropriated.
The exposés, dubbed ‘Vampire Diaries,’ and his unrelenting spirit to hold the government accountable have, however, come at a cost.
On October 4th, 2024, Morara was injured during chaotic scenes at Bomas while attending a public participation exercise on the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The self-proclaimed civic educator has also been arrested twice, spending nights in cold police cells, but was later released without any charges.
Undeterred by these incidents, Morara has resolved to run for president in a quest to transform from an imitator of power to a wielder of it.
While some may consider him young and inexperienced, Morara believes he is up to the task. He has founded the Inclusive National Justice, Economic and Civic Transformation Party, otherwise referred to as the INJECT Party, as his political vehicle to State House. His top priority, if elected, will be to root out corruption.
He acknowledges that his only worthy competitor is Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who recently appointed a team to assess his presidential prospects. Morara has dismissed other potential contenders, such as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, as representatives of the old guard.
Instead of distributing money to his supporters, as many politicians allegedly do, Morara has been openly asking for financial contributions from his followers to fund his political activities.
While his critics label him a glorified conman, Morara maintains that his fundraising methods are transparent and serve a noble cause. He claims to have received six million shillings from supporters, which he insists has been properly managed.
In addition to public scrutiny, Morara has faced criticism from fellow activists, some of whom accuse him of sabotaging the Gen Z movement and being a proxy for hidden interests.
Despite these challenges, Morara remains confident that time will vindicate him.
