Mombasa County youth strive to clear flood-prone areas
The Mombasa County youth program, launched five months ago to clean the tourist town, seems to be yielding fruit as most areas previously prone to flooding due to waste clogging have shown significant improvements in drainage.
Despite heavy downpours in Mombasa, stormwater cleared after a few minutes in most areas such as Kibarani, Jomo Kenyatta Avenue, Sheikh Abdullas Road, and Majengo, where locals have suffered floods for years whenever it rains.
Ahmed Mohammed, a Majengo resident, said, “My compound has been flooding for many years due to the dumpsite which has been here for many years, but since the youth cleared it, we can comfortably walk around a few minutes after heavy downpour.” On Saturday morning, rains pounded the County, forcing hundreds of Muslim faithful who had planned to converge and hold Eid ul Fitr special prayers at Ronald Ngala grounds to change venue due to ongoing heavy rains.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, who led the group, had to hold prayers at Memon mosque where he called on leaders to embrace peace. “We were to have prayers at Ronald Ngala but had to shift since the ground is flooded. As we celebrate Eid Fitri, we are asking Kenyans to maintain peace as the government tries to resolve issues affecting them,” said Governor Nassir.
He also directed the concerned department to unclog all blocked stormwater lines to reduce the effects of floods. The youth program dubbed Mombasa Yetu Program has yielded fruits, as most areas have cleared on their own since the youth cleared trash that had been in those areas for long. More than 2,000 youth were employed in Mombasa in December last year to work on cleanliness and beautification, safety, and traffic flow. The program has yielded fruits five months later, with many dumpsites within the tourist town cleared.
During the few hours of floods, commuters using the Mombasa-Changamwe highway were stranded after the road was cut off by heavy rains. Several people missed morning flights and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train since that is the only road used to access Moi International Airport and Miritini SGR terminus.
