Misuse of pesticides linked to rising cases of cancer in Embu
The CEO of the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), Esther Kimani, has pointed to the misuse of pesticides as the reason behind the rising cases of cancer in Embu County.
Speaking at an event hosted by the PCPB in Embu, Kimani said that many farmers in the county have been using banned pesticides, leading to the loss of some foreign horticulture markets for Kenya.
She said PCPB has taken steps to curb this problem by partnering with county governments to create Sprays Service Providers (SSPs).
Kimani explained that the SSPs will monitor and educate farmers on the use of pesticides, working with the PCPB to prevent the use of banned and prohibited chemicals. She also highlighted that the SSPs will be entrusted with the task of ensuring that farmers do not use the wrong type of pesticides for their crops.
The national chairman of the PCPB, Njoroge Kagwe, added that the board will publish a list of banned pesticides and license all SSPs to prevent farmers from dealing with unlicensed middlemen. He said that the move will help the board to eliminate the influence of cartels in the pesticide industry.
Kimani added that farmers in Mbeere North and South Embu have been using pesticides intended for flowers, which is why the SSPs will play an important role in ensuring proper usage of pesticides.
She said, “Through the partnership with county governments and the formation of sprays service providers, the board will be able to monitor cartels that are selling banned and prohibited pesticides to farmers.”
Kagwe echoed her sentiments and stated, “In an effort to scale down the misuse of pesticides by farmers, the PCPB is also set to publish and list down all the pesticide chemicals that were banned in the market. This move will help the board weed out cartels who have been misadvising farmers on pesticides in the country.”
The PCPB’s efforts to address the misuse of pesticides will play an important role in protecting the health of Kenyans and preserving the reputation of Kenya’s horticulture industry.
Embu county reports over 200 cancer cases annually with over 5,000 cases reported in the county according to officials.
