Mirema nightclubs still operating despite court order to close
Three nightclubs and a church are still operational along Mirema Drive despite a court order that fined them Sh5 million and ordered their closure. The court case, filed by the Amani Residents Association, targeted the nightclubs for noise pollution and public nuisance caused by their clientele.
Njuguna Mbigi, chair of the Amani Residents Association, expressed his frustration, stating, “The impression we get as a society is that they are not inclined to respect either the law or the court order.”
Mbigi is particularly disheartened by the continued operation of Trinity House International Church and three nightclubs, “La Tessara Lounge, Cocorico, and Paris Lounge Mirema”.
According to Mbigi, residents are exhausted by the constant noise pollution from the clubs.
“Everybody was coming home tired, then you wake up tired having to go to work after spending the night perhaps not in a very joyous state,” Mbigi explained.
Residents have had to find ways to shield themselves from the noise. Obadae Mwaura, a Mirema resident, said, “Some of the neighbours, especially those very near to these places, have had to soundproof their homes because the noise is unbearable.”
Mwaura, a preacher, also mentioned that the noise from Trinity House International Church was unbearable. “For example, you have prayers the whole night regardless of the neighbourhood. I think that’s not being kind; it’s actually not the biblical way,” he said.
NTV conducted a spot check of the area and found that the nightclubs were operational as early as 7:30 PM, with parking lots nearly full and revellers already arriving.
Sospeter Mumbi, MCA of Roysambu, commented, “The people who are benefiting from these clubs are mostly not from Roysambu. They come, cause mayhem, disturb us, and then go back to their respective residential areas.”
Mwaura added, “We have had situations where we are caught in a jam on Mirema Drive at midnight or even 1 AM. You drive peacefully from wherever, but when you are 700-800 meters from your house, you stay there for half an hour or an hour.”
Residents are now questioning the Nairobi County leadership. Mbigi asked, “How would you allow or license pubs to operate within the vicinity of neighbourhoods and especially schools?”
Last year, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja ordered the closure of several nightclubs due to noise pollution. While some clubs complied by lowering their noise levels, others ignored the directive. Roysambu MCA Sospeter Mumbi believes it’s time to revisit these issues.
“I think the governor has all the powers to summon these investors and say enough is enough,” Mumbi stated.
For now, the Sh5 million awarded to the residents by the courts await settlement, but it appears the issue of noise pollution will not be resolved soon.
