Mikhail Gorbachev, man who changed the course of History, Dies at 91,
Mikhail Gorbachev, known as the man who changed the course of History has rested at the age of 91, Russian news agencies reported
Gorbachev the last Leader of the former Soviet Union (USSR), and the man credited for helping end the Cold War died on Tuesday after a long and severe illness.
Gorbachev became known in the Sovietologist circles in 1985, after the death of Brezhnev and thus his appointment as the general secretary of the Communist party, He hit the road running and in his believe that centralisation and bureaucracy in the USSR could not achieve economic revival he introduced Perestroika (restructuring) and Glasnost (openness) which brought down the curtains of communism.
During his reign as the leader of the USSR, Gorbachev will be remembered as the man who came face to face with American President Ronald Reagan at a summit in Iceland and demanded the elimination of all long-range missiles held by the United States and the Soviet Union, signing the Anti-nuclear Proliferation Treaty which was the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
He however would be known as a ‘paper dictator’ in his reign over USSR with his policies described as simple but not practical, Russia fell apart in his hands and he was despised and derided in his country, a coup was staged in August 1991 which led to the end of the communist party and thus the disbandment of the Soviet Union in December 1991.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 “for his leading role in the peace process which today characterises important parts of the international community.”
