Meru town matatu owners complain over harassment by county askaris; issue strike notice
14-seater matatu owners from Meru County are complaining about what they say is harassment by the Meru County askaris.
Led by their Chairman, Charles Koronya, in Meru town, the matatu owners said the county askaris have been detaining their matatus whenever a matatu stops outside of designated areas, and then fining the owners KES 8,000, far beyond the required KES 3,000.
They accused the askaris of harassment even during non-working hours, including weekends and other public hours, something they claim did not happen during previous regimes.
The 14-seater matatu owners claim that the newly employed motorbike county askaris are the most notorious, and at times, these askaris damage the vehicles using their “rungus”.
The matatu owners are now appealing to Meru Governor Bishop Kawira Mwangaza to grant them an audience to discuss the way forward in conducting their business before the situation worsens.
They have threatened to stop their services and park their vehicles if the Meru Governor does not address their concerns. The Meru County askaris team of 10 was launched on March 3rd by Governor Kawira Mwangaza with the aim of controlling traffic within the town, but instead of solving problems, the matatu owners claim they are now causing bigger problems.
