Meru leaders demand swift action in George Kaliunga’s killing investigation
Meru leaders demand speedy investigations and the arrest of six people suspected to be key actors in the killing of former Antubetwe MCA, George Kaliunga, who was killed a few weeks ago while pursuing stolen goats.
According to the leaders, the government seems to be moving at a snail’s pace to investigate and arrest the suspects, despite a directive from Interior CS Kithure Kindiki. They are now threatening to arm the residents to defend themselves against bandits.
Led by Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu, the suspects are believed to have escaped after committing the crime. Taitumu says the government has the mandate to look for them in whichever way and bring them to book. He added that, despite the OCPD and the OCS being transferred to various stations in the country, they also need to be investigated, as they were with the deceased during that fateful morning when the incident occurred.
Tigania East MP Mpuri Aburi reiterated that the officers need to be arrested and, if found guilty, taken to Maua Law Court for charges.
“We are telling the government there is no need to fight, but the OCPD, OCS, chiefs, and sub-chief who were named to be with the deceased at the time of killing be investigated and taken to Maua law court, not in Nairobi nor their home place,” said Mpuri. Former Igembe North MP Maoka Maore said that the government should not spare the criminals and they should deal with them and treat them for what they are.
Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma said that the Meru community is tired of being terrorized by bandits and they no longer need empty promises from the government; it’s time for quick action.
“The way CS Kindiki is fighting in Baringo, Pokot, and Shakahola, we need that machinery to be brought to Meru so that we can have peace here,” Mutuma said. He added that if the government cannot protect its people, they have the capability and capacity of protecting themselves.
Kaliunga left behind 5 wives and 11 children.
