Meru County partners with SmileTrain, KidsOR to open state-of-the-art pediatric theatre
Meru County has partnered with SmileTrain and KidsOR to open a regional, ultramodern operating theatre at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital. The theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge technologies to provide the best surgical services for children. Kids Operating Room (Kids OR) Africa Director Rosemary Mugwe, speaking in Meru during the launch of the first pediatric theatre in the eastern region, said that there was a need for enhanced training of pediatric surgeons to increase access to quality care for children. The child-friendly operating room at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital was funded by Kids OR and Smile Train at a cost of more than KES 50 million.
County governments have been challenged to support the training of more pediatric surgeons to reduce the biting shortage in the country. According to the Kenya Association of Pediatric Surgeons, there are about 25 qualified pediatric surgeons, with the majority based in the capital city of Nairobi.
“Shortage of pediatric surgical equipment is also one of the impediments to access for children. This is because, for example, a scalpel used for adult surgery cannot be used in children,” she said. Besides the building, the two organizations also provided about 3,000 pieces of surgical equipment for pediatric surgery.
According to Dr. Njoroge, having specialized operating rooms for children reduces trauma during and after surgery.
“The pediatric theatre in Meru will go a long way in increasing the number of children who can access our cleft lip and palate surgeries. We will also work with the county government in training pediatric surgeons,” Dr. Njoroge said.
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza said that this is a great milestone because it will revolutionize the delivery of pediatric health services not only in Meru but also regionally, regardless of the beneficiaries’ socioeconomic status. It is a dream come true.
