Meru County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board intensifies campaign against illicit brews
Meru County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board has intensified its operations of sensitizing the public on the dangers of illicit brews and excess alcohol through road shows to various towns and rural areas. Led by the board CEO Mr Muguna Mbaabu, the campaign whose slogan is “kaa sober” is aimed at sensitizing the public following a report on how Meru residents have been affected negatively by alcohol and drug abuse. According to Mr Muguna, this year the board has so far closed over 130 bars in the county that have failed to comply with the government regulations.
Major pubs and bars which have been closed are said not to be in a clean and conducive environment, not meeting the size of the bar and those near learning institutions. They said the preference for illicit brews that have not met the standard of human consumption has increased and has arrested several suspects and will be arraigned in court soon.
“If you want to drink any alcohol, please check if it’s well labelled, and has an expiring date before taking it”, Muguna said.
As a result of alcohol and drug abuse in the county, Muguna said that all the five rehabilitation centres within the county are full to their capacity and the county is in the process of building a big rehabilitation centre if the numbers continue to increase. He added that more than 4 billion shillings are used every year on alcohol saying if quick actions won’t be taken things might get worse.
They said Imenti South Constituency is leading with more pubs and bars in the county where not only men are affected by alcoholism but women also are in high numbers.
