Maseno University student killed; police allege self-defence in Maandamano Monday protests
A Maseno University student was killed during the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya protests in Maseno. Unfortunately, what began as a peaceful demonstration turned violent as the protesters invaded Sairam supermarket in Maseno town and other businesses along Kisumu-Busia road. The protesters lit bonfires and barricaded stones along the road.
As tensions rose, the students began pelting stones at the police line, causing damage to 10 houses and the police station. Six police officers were injured during the skirmishes, and the officers, who had run out of teargas canisters and blanks, were forced to fire live bullets.
The demonstrators threw stones and injured six officers during “skirmishes” in Maseno, prompting the security forces to fire live bullets, police said, adding that “William Mayange, a third-year student, was hit on the neck” and pronounced dead upon arrival at Coptic Hospital.
“They overpowered the officers who were manning the station: the fact that the officers had run out of teargas cannisters and blanks. Six police officers were injured during the skirmishes. This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets,” reads the police report in part.
The case is currently under investigation by PUI and DCI Kisumu West.
