Man jailed for 10 years for supplying transformer oil to hotel owner
A man who vandalized a 100kva transformer and supplied the oil to a hotel owner for cooking has been sentenced to 10 years in prison or a fine of KES 10 million.
Zachary Mwangi Gitau was convicted under section 169 (1) of the Energy Act of 2019 which prohibits tampering with electricity equipment or infrastructure.
His accomplice Elijah Mwangi Muthoga, who operated a hotel at Ol Kalou trading centre, was also jailed for two years or fined KES 200,000 for selling potato chips cooked using transformer oil.
The two were arrested in December 2021 after Kenya Power’s security team raided their premises and found 11 litres of transformer oil that was used to fry chips at the hotel and also repackaged as popcorn cooking oil.
The vandalism of the transformer disrupted power supply to several customers and exposed them to the risk of electrocution.
Kenya Power’s Acting Manager for Security Services Paul Nyaga welcomed the ruling, saying it will deter other vandals and protect the company’s assets.
He said Kenya Power has intensified surveillance of its network through partnerships with other security agencies and the National Government Administration Officers to stamp out illegal activities and safeguard electricity assets.
He also urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities around electricity installations or cases of adulterated cooking oil to the relevant authorities.
Vandalism of transformers is one of the leading causes of power outages in Kenya. In addition to undermining the quality and reliability of electricity supply, it costs Kenya Power millions of shillings in lost sales and replacement costs.
