Man in trouble for running a scam in Makadara court
A fraud suspect arrested at Makadara Law Courts where he tried to defraud a woman of Sh50,000 under the guise of facilitating her brother’s release from remand has been charged.
Vincent Khaimba is accused of defrauding Agnes Ngina while falsely pretending to facilitate the release of her brother Josephat Muli, who is in Nairobi Area Remand Prison after being charged with theft.
Muli had called Khaimba and asked him to help him get out of remand. He put Khaimba in touch with his sister – Ngina – and the two began communicating.
Khaimba allegedly told Ngina to send him the Sh5000 on 23 October to facilitate a production order for Muli to be brought to court from remand, which she sent and later he allegedly demanded Sh50,000.
The Sh50,000, according to Khaimba, was to bribe a magistrate to release Muli.
He instructed Ngina to meet him at the court after his ‘meeting’ with the magistrate on 25 October.
However, Ngina arrived early and went to the magistrate’s courtroom, where she was told that the magistrate in question had been on leave for almost two weeks.
Ngina informed police officers, who laid in wait and arrested Khaimba when he arrived to collect the Sh50,000.
He was handed over to officers at Shaurimoyo police station, where he was detained.
Khaimba denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Erick Mutunga and pleaded for lenient bail and bond terms through lawyer Cyril Njagi.
Njagi told the court that Khaimba is a veterinary officer in Vihiga County.
Mutunga granted the suspect a bond of Sh300, 000 without an option of a cash bail.
The case will come up for mention on 13 February next year before the trial starts on 7 May.
