Man charged with impersonating Principal Magistrate’s spouse for 3 years
For three years, a 29-year-old man – a caretaker in a private school in Kariobangi, Nairobi has allegedly been impersonating the spouse of Kilifi Principal Magistrate, Ivy Wasike.
Cryspinus Malenya Inyama from Khayega Sub-location in Kakamega County appeared before Kilifi Senior Resident Magistrate Daniel Sitati on Tuesday, where he was charged with impersonation and cybersquatting. He is said to have gained financially and in other favours since 2020.
The suspect has reportedly been soliciting money from the Principal Magistrate’s colleagues, friends and relatives, using a Safaricom line formerly used by the Magistrate.
The Principal Magistrate reported the matter at Kilifi Police Station – OB/31/09/01/2024.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Kilifi arrested Inyanya on January 15 in Nairobi and presented him to the Kilifi Court, where they were granted 14 days to conclude investigations but on Tuesday he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The accused will appear in Court on February 13 for sentencing.
Wasike in her affidavit said that she reported the matter to Safaricom customer care three times in vain forcing her to take legal action.
At the time of arrest, he had received Sh2,000 from Dr Vincent Chokaa, an Advocate, after he asked him for ‘Christmas’ through a WhatsApp message.
According to the Principal Magistrate, she acquired a Safaricom line between 2010 and 2011 which she registered under her name.
She continued using the line until early 2020 when she realized that the same number was being used by someone else for some reason.
The Principal magistrate said the suspect took advantage of the sim card to solicit funds from members of the public.
“I didn’t understand or comprehend how that number was reissued and despite contacting Safaricom customer care, I got no assistance and I had to do away with it,” she said.
She added, “I was informed by the Safaricom Customer representative that the said line was re-issued to another subscriber and that I should call my contacts informing them that I no longer use the number.”
In the police report, Wasike said her callers kept asking her through her new number why her boyfriend or husband kept asking weird questions and some favours, such as lunch money, money for the weekend and some money to be sent to the magistrate.
“This created a negative image and perception about me and my fellow colleagues and Judges since when we met for an official or social gathering they kept asking me about the type of man in my life and how he carried himself around other collegues of mine, particularly females,” she said.
According to the charge sheet on diverse dates between December 27, 2023, and January 8, 2024, the accused falsely represented himself to Dr Vincent Chokaa, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya as Ivy Wasike.
He was also charged with defrauding Dr Chokaa.
