Afcon fan who asked for woman’s number in viral video apologises to wife
An Ivorian football fan who was caught on camera in the stands during an African Cup of Nations (Afcon) match trying to chat with a female fan has apologised to his wife and children.
The man, now identified as Anselme Santos, was seen in the viral video asking a Senegalese woman for her phone number during an Afcon match last Monday.
The moment was captured in the heat of the celebrations following Ivory Coast’s win over Senegal.
Speaking on Ivorian TV talk show Willy a Midi (Willy at Noon), Santos said the celebrations led him from the VIP lounge to where the woman was. Her team had just lost.
“She was hoisting the Senegalese flag and shouting “ooooh Ivorians”, so I came over to where she was standing and playfully teased her” he said.
Santos’ determined effort to strike up a conversation with his new acquaintance instead was caught on camera and quickly turned into instant meme material.
“I asked her for her number… In the euphoria, I said to her, ‘Give me your number’. It wasn’t mean, but she didn’t want it. So I didn’t insist,” he said.
Santos added that he was surprised that the few seconds had made him an internet celebrity.
“I did not know anyone was filming me, I only discovered the video on social media. People started calling me a star, that they had seen my video on the internet and when I saw it I was not happy,” he said.
Santos confessed that his wife was not impressed with his behaviour, prompting him to make a public apology.
“My family was not happy with the video. I’m not a social media person… But I use this opportunity to apologise to my family – my wife.”
“I also take this opportunity to apologise to the woman [in the video], her family, her partner and her community. I want to say it was not intentional, it just happened because we were having fun”.
Hosts Ivory Coast were in a precarious position at the tournament, facing the possibility of being knocked out after finishing third in the group stage.
As a result, the Ivorian FA sacked coach Jean-Louis Gasset even before the teams for the knockout stage had been drawn.
Led by interim coach Emerse Fae, the Elephants fell behind to Senegal in the fourth minute after Habib Diallo’s opener. However, they fought their way back into the game and levelled the scores with four minutes remaining in normal time through Franck Kessie’s penalty.
