M23 rebel group gives back key military base in eastern D.R Congo
This week, M23 rebels in the eastern side of the Democratic Republic Congo promised to retreat from a strategic position even as they conquered territories elsewhere, throwing confusion over the future direction of a year-long conflict. The armed group has taken over swaths of territory in North Kivu province in recent months and advanced towards its capital, Goma. The Rumangabo military base, captured in November, was handed over to EACRF troops Wednesday last week.
Under heavy international pressure to cease fighting, on December 23rd, the M23 armed group delivered the strategic town of Kibumba to a regional military force, calling the move a “goodwill gesture done in the name of peace”.
At the dawn of the new year, the group also pledged to hand over Rumangabo military base to the East African community’s military force, which deployed late last year in a bid to restore stability in the troubled region.
On January 6th , EACRF troops took over Rumangabo, led by the deputy force commander, Brigadier General Emmanuel Kaputa.
While taking over the strategic military installation, the EACRF Deputy Force Commander reiterated the need for all parties to the conflict to embrace the ceasefire as outlined in the Luanda communique of November 23rd 2022, and the subsequent deliberations agreed upon from the Nairobi process..
Even then, the Congolese republic has been wary of the plans by the M23, terming the moves as strategic.
Clashes between the M23, Congolese troops and rival militias have continued, fighting has been ongoing in the Bwiza region of North Kivu’s Rutshuru territory in the last few weeks.
Fighting between the m23 and opposing armed groups broke out in the Tongo area of North Kivu’s Rutshuru territory in late December. M23 spokesman Willy Ngoma accused the Congolese army and allied militia groups of provoking the fighting.
It is also reported that M23 rebels are holding civilians hostage for suspected collaboration.
In June last year, the rebels also captured the town of Bunagana on the Ugandan border, offering them control of a vital trade crossing.
Days after EACRF troops took over control of Kibumba, some residents flocked back, however, for others the allure of peace is nothing but a mirage for them.
