Luxury homes in Kakamega demolished to make way for affordable housing
Residents of Milimani Estate in Kakamega town are counting their losses following a massive demolition of houses to pave the way for the government’s affordable housing project.
President William Ruto commissioned the project, earmarked for the Milimani area, during his last visit to the region in September.
The demolition kicked off on Tuesday morning in the leafy suburb which neighbours the Kakamega State Lodge leaving behind a trail of destruction estimated at millions of shillings.
Also affected is the palatial home of Tejveer Singh Rai.
So far more than 12 properties have been destroyed in the up-market area including those belonging to several prominent people including Former Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.
There are unconfirmed reports that the residents were served with a seven-day eviction notice dated September 6, which instructed them to move out of the land whose lease is alleged to have expired.
However, the owners of the properties claimed they were never served with any notice to vacate their premises.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has condemned the exercise terming it illegal and unconstitutional.
LSK Kakamega Chapter chairperson Maureen Odeke accused the Western regional commissioner of defying a court order that was instituted to stop the demolitions.
“We had asked the Regional Commissioner to stop the interference with properties in Milimani Estate in Kakamega and halt demolitions after he asked property owners for documents about their properties. Even though they submitted the documents they were suspicious and moved to court all the same,” said Ms Odeke.
Ms Odeke claimed the demolition targeted properties belonging to prominent individuals including judicial officers and business tycoons.
Mr Isaac Too, a security guard in the estate said a lot of property was looted by marauding youth.
“Efforts by the police to disperse them with teargas did not bear much fruit because they remained adamant to their cause and kept challenging the police officers,” said Mr Too.
The affected residents were forced to keep vigil to protect whatever was left from being stolen by youths.
