Looming strike by commercial and PSV drivers over NTSA re-testing
Long Distance Driver’s and Conductors Association (LODDCA) in collaboration with the Kenya Diver’s Association (KDA) and the Unity of All Kenyan Drivers threaten a county-wide strike in Bungoma for commercial and Public Service Vehicle drivers on July 12, 2023.
The drivers plan to down their tools if an amicable solution, regarding the government’s plan through the National Transport and Safety Authority, NTSA to retest and charge all drivers a fee of KES 1050, is not found
The chairperson of LODCCA, Elijah Nyaga while addressing the media and drivers at the Busia bus terminus said the decision by NTSA was uncalled for.
“If the government, through the Ministry of Transport, will not act by July 12th we will proceed with strikes across the country,” Nyaga, accompanied by Dennis Masinde who is the chairperson for Kenya Driver’s Association (KDA) said
Chairperson of KDA, David Cherono Masinde, backed Nyaga saying that the NTSA should look at improving and approving driving schools at the ground level instead of harassing drivers who were already done with school.
LODDCA has also called on Cabinet Secretary of Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Kipchumba Murkomen to halt the process by NTSA with immediate effect and call for dialogue.
The drivers also said the Ministry of Labour should move with speed and handle cases of rouge drivers from the neighbouring countries who are using Kenyan roads without proper documentation.
The long-distance truck drivers say this has led to many truck drivers in Kenya lacking jobs, yet they possess the right documents to operate.
They have also asked the government to involve them in decision-making on representation and legislation matters saying all commercial and (Personal Service Vehicle) PSV drivers will not operate until they have sorted out the issue.
“We believe it is crucial for the government to consider the important role that drivers play in the building of the economy,” Nyaga added.
