On Thursday morning, a group of Kishushe artisanal quartz miners demonstrated at Kishushe town, Taita Taveta county after their trucks ferrying minerals were blocked by police.
The locals of Kishushe town said that if they were not allowed to dig up quartz, they would not have anywhere to get money from especially during the tough economic times.
The artisanal miners claim the local administration is working with some politicians to frustrate them.
One of the locals from the town, Juliana, claims during an interview that the local administration of the area has been on their necks with the intention of trying to stop them from earning a living from the minerals so that they can dig them up for themselves.
“Mimi nasikitika kuwa kila saa tukipata ajira huwa tunafukuzwa na walio na pesa zao .Kwa nini kila wakati huwa tunadhulumiwa , saa hii tunatishwa na mateargas ,saa zote ni kulengwa na hizo mateargas, jamani sisi wanaKishushe mnataka tuweje?”
She also questioned the government on what will be the state if they are not allowed to make a living from mining in the area. Meanwhile, demonstrations in the area are still ongoing.
