LIVE: Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response in Africa
The Nation media group in partnership with Pandemic Action Network Africa have organized a dialogue with leaders in Africa to take stock where we are with the various initiatives and come up with suggestion on how we can work collaboratively to bolster the progress in making Africa and the world better prepared to prevent and manage future pandemics.
This forum is being held in light of the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on reshaping the multilateral approach to pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPPR).
It discusses a number of efforts that are underway at the national, regional, and global levels to improve PPPR. In Africa, several policies and political processes are currently underway, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for proactive and unified approaches to safeguarding public health and promoting global well-being.
One of the key outcomes of the forum is expected to be a political declaration that will shape the conversations in two important global processes: the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for a Pandemic Accord at the World Health Organization and the consideration of amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) by Member States. It is hoped that the political declaration will provide for an accountable global pandemic preparedness agenda backed by an independent monitoring framework.
