List of Heads of State attending Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi
At least 20 heads of state are expected to attend the Africa Climate Summit and Africa Climate Week 2023 at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) in Nairobi.
The inaugural Africa Climate Summit, championed by President William Ruto, aims to address the increasing exposure to climate change and its associated costs, both globally and particularly in Africa.
With the expectation of escalating climate crises in terms of frequency and intensity, urgent action is required to mitigate these challenges.
The Summit is expected to serve as a platform to inform, frame, and influence commitments, pledges, and outcomes, ultimately leading to the development of the Nairobi Declaration.
Some of the heads of state whose arrival has been confirmed include Comoros President Azali Assoumani, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Ghanaian President Nana Okufu Addo, and Sarhawi President Brahim Ghali, who were received by Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua on Monday morning.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit (Sudan), Sahle-Work Zewde (Ethiopia), Suluhu Samia (Tanzania), Macky Sall (Senegal) and Mohamed Al-Menfi (Libya) also arrived in the county on Monday afternoon.
They were received by a delegation from the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs led by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.
Over 20,000 delegates are also expected to attend the inaugural climate event.
Other high-profile and prominent people attending the event are Simon Stielli, Executive Secretary UNFCC; United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres; Common Wealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland; US Special Climate Envoy John Kerry; Chief Climate Officer USAID Gillian Caldwell; State Secretary and Special Envoy for New Climate Action Germany Jeniffer Morgan.
The event commenced on Monday, September 4, and is expected to take place until September 6.
