Leaders clash over claims of Speaker Wetang’ula ouster at charged funeral
Leaders from Western Kenya on Saturday clashed over a purported plot to remove Moses Wetang’ula from the office of the Speaker of the National Assembly.
The leaders also clashed on the government’s performance, with some calling for patience and others asking President William Ruto to rethink some policies that have hit headwinds.
While others felt the reports of the purported ouster are wrong and only meant to create division in the Western region, some believe that should the move be made, there is a likelihood it would be a successful one.
The leaders were speaking on Saturday at the burial of former Kimilili MP Suleiman Murunga in Bungoma County.
It is former Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eugene Wamalwa who stirred the storm asking Mr Wetang’ula to be cautious since there was a planned ouster for him.
He stated that he should not sit pretty after seeing what happened to the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“My brother Wetang’ula should be careful after Rigathi was ousted as the DP. Ask yourself: if they can impeach the second-in-command that brought over four million votes, what makes you think you who brought about 200,000 votes cannot suffer the same fate?” asked Mr Wamalwa.
He asked Mr Wetang’ula not to ignore such rumours “just like Mr Gachagua did”, only to be impeached.
He used the Swahili proverb: “Lisemwalo lipo, na kama halipo laja (loosely translated to where there is smoke there is fire).”
Mr Wamalwa stated that there are no permanent friends and enemies in politics, just interests, and therefore Mr Wetang’ula should align to their camp of new friends.
“The political formations keep changing, and many will come in the future. Should something happen that you are removed, then I will welcome and support you to a bigger coalition,” said Mr Wamalwa in a mixture of English and Luyha.
He said Mr Wetang’ula will find a home in the larger coalition that brings together the Kikuyus, Kamba, Luhya and many other like-minded communities.
Surprisingly, the same Mr Wamalwa had earlier warned Mr Gachagua during a funeral of the former Nacada boss Victor Okioma in Kitale, Trans Nzoia; urging him to be careful.
But a confident Mr Gachagua downplayed his warnings, maintaining that “mimi ni chuma ya zamani. We formed this government and will not move an inch.”
