Laikipia farmer hacked to death by his neighbour
A 40-year-old farmer has been hacked to death by his neighbour in a village in Laikipia County following a quarrel.
Bernard Mwangi Ngetha was herding sheep on his farm at Kalalu village when he was accosted by the 38-year-old panga-wielding assailant on Wednesday at 3pm.
Laikipia East Police Commander John Tarus said Ngetha died from excessive bleeding while being rushed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital. The assailant slashed him severally on the back before he picked up a sharp-edged stone and hit him on the head.
“Soon after the attack, the assailant fled but was later apprehended by police at around 9pm through the help of villagers.
“We have not yet established the motive or circumstances behind the attack that resulted in death,” said the police boss.
Following the incident, an irate mob set ablaze the assailant’s house while baying for his blood.
Police officers from Umande Police Station joined in the manhunt that lasted six hours.
Meanwhile, a man accused of killing his elder sister has been arraigned before the High Court in Nanyuki to face murder charges.
Joseph Gitahi Wanjohi, 45, is accused of killing 49-year-old Rebecca Njeri Wanjohi on January 13 at Kiburuti village in Laikipia Central Sub-County.
He was arraigned before Nanyuki Resident Judge Anthony Ndung’u on Thursday but did not plead to the charges since the State is yet to appoint a lawyer to represent him.
The court ruled that Wanjohi be presented before the court on February 13 to be formally charged with the offence.
