Kenya Wildlife Services has proposed an increase in conservation fees for parks, reserves and sanctuaries. The wildlife service stated it incorporated recommendations given by the public in the proposed fees.
The service proposal seeks to triple the previous conservation fee.
In the new prices, the charges for going into the Nairobi national park have been raised to Sh2250 from the previous price of approximately Sh450 for East African Visitors.
East African children will now pay sh650 from the previous price of approximately sh 215.
For parks like Meru Park, the proposed prices for adults have been raised to sh500 from sh300 while that of children has been raised to sh 250 from sh 215.
The proposed increase in conservation fees has sparked an online uproar as most citizens allege
“They want to increase Nairobi National Park fees from sh430 to sh2,000. Do these people even check what our neighbouring countries are offering and their charges before they make some of these decisions??” Wrote a tweep.
“Hey @KWSKenya this is ill-advised,” another said.
“Public participation is an important aspect of governance that, globally, citizens have failed to embrace fully. That said, govt institutions need to actively involve the public in decisions involving money. For instance, KWS should give us a report of the February public participation that led to the proposed increase in park fees,” another tweeter used posted.
