Kuppet: Fee payment through e-Citizen will lock out poor students
Kenya Union of Post-primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) now wants the government to respect the court order that stopped the payment of school fees through the e-Citizen Portal directive by the Ministry of Education.
KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori has said that even though the union does not oppose technology, there is a need for proper public participation to be conducted on the matter before the plan is implemented.
Speaking after meeting union representatives from Central Kenya in Kirinyaga, Akello said that if the directive is implemented without public participation, students from less fortunate families will not be able to go to school.
The Secretary-General has said most of the parents in rural areas pay school fees in kind, where they take agricultural products to schools as fees for their children.
He said the Ministry of Education needs to explain how school fees in kind will be submitted through the online portal.
Akello said the Ministry should come clean concerning parents who work and do casual jobs in school to pay school fees for their children and how that will be done through the portal.
The teachers union has also called upon the National Treasury to move with speed and gazette trustees to the public service pension scheme saying the gazettement has taken longer than is required.
Chairman Amboko Miremba claimed there were law-key plans to mismanage and misappropriate the funds by passing the names presented as trustees by the various unions.
