Koimburi abduction saga: MCA Grace Nduta, three other suspects brought before court
A member of the Murang’a County Assembly and four other suspects arraigned in court in connection with the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi will know on Friday afternoon whether they will remain in custody pending the conclusion of investigations as sought by the police.
Milimani Magistrate Rose Ndombi set the ruling for Friday afternoon after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought orders to hold the suspects for 15 days.
The suspects presented before court include Kanyenyaini MCA Grace Nduta, Juja National Government Constituency Development Fund Chairman Peter Kiratu Mbaru, David Macharia Gatana, and Cyrus Kieru Muhia.
Suspects named, ties to MP
According to the DCI, the legislator was allegedly abducted on May 25, 2025, from the Full Gospel Ebenezer Church in Mugutha under unclear circumstances. The motive for the abduction remains unknown.
The investigating officer, Nicholas Njoroge, stated that releasing the suspects at this stage would interfere with ongoing investigations.
He added that the MP was yet to record a statement, and medical reports regarding his current condition are still pending.
“The allegations have since created panic, fear, and sharp political opinions across the country and within Juja constituency, which is cosmopolitan in nature. This poses a threat to national peace and stability,” the DCI stated in court papers.
The DCI further noted that Mr Koimburi remained critically ill, according to close friends and family members, and his prognosis is unknown.
He is currently admitted to Karen Hospital in Nairobi, having earlier been taken to Plainsview Hospital in Ruiru.
The suspects were being investigated for multiple offences, including kidnapping in order to murder, contrary to Section 258 of the Penal Code, creating disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace, contrary to Section 95(1)(b) and giving false information to a person employed in the public service, contrary to Section 129(a).
According to police records, three were arrested on May 28, 2025, and booked at various police stations—Capitol Hill, Industrial Area, and Muthaiga.
It is alleged that the abduction was first reported by Mbaru, who claimed that the MP had been taken by two masked men in a Subaru Forester shortly after attending the church service, which ended at 2:00 pm.
Police confirmed the incident at the church through CCTV footage and witness accounts. The event quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread concern among the public, Members of Parliament, and the MP’s family and supporters.
The DCI revealed that two days before the alleged abduction, on May 23, 2025, Mr Koimburi had evaded arrest at a public function at Gachororo Primary School, where he was distributing bursary funds.
He reportedly fled on a motorcycle after learning that DCI officers were at the event to apprehend him.
Mr Koimburi then reportedly switched off his known phone numbers. His driver, along with the vehicle a black Toyota Prado (registration KDQ 854J) was taken to DCI headquarters. The driver was questioned and released without charges, and the vehicle remains in DCI custody.
Land fraud connection
The DCI said the MP was to be arrested in connection with a land fraud case involving a parcel of land in Ruiru.
The Director of Public Prosecution had recommended his prosecution on several charges, including obtaining registration of title by false pretences (Section 320), conspiracy to defraud (Section 317), forgery (Section 347 read with Section 349 and uttering false documents (Section 353).
The DCI says that due to the high-profile nature of the case and its implications for national security, a multi-agency team was formed to investigate the matter.
On May 26, 2025, a video emerged on social media showing that the MP had allegedly been found seriously injured and abandoned in a coffee plantation.
He was later admitted to Plainsview Hospital before being transferred to Karen Hospital. Investigators say they have been unable to interview him, with hospital authorities stating that he is not in a condition to speak and citing patient privacy in refusing to divulge further medical details.
The DCI also claims that preliminary investigations revealed that after evading arrest, the MP returned safely to his Mugutha home.
