Kirinyaga family seeking justice after kin dies hours after he was arrested
A family in Kavuti village, in Kirinyaga East sub-county, is calling for investigations to unravel the mysterious circumstances under which their 41-year-old kin died in police custody.
The family members took Elias Kinyua to the Kavuti police post as punishment after he attacked and assaulted his mother.
They had hoped that spending a few nights in the police station would transform the man, but they are now planning his funeral.
According to the deceased father, Benson Mutero, the man beat up his mother on Sunday evening at around 10 pm, demanding to be given his share of the family piece of land.
Mutero said he called his younger brothers to come and help him as the deceased, whom he described as hostile. The men tied the man with ropes and took him to Kavuti police post where he was locked.
Mutero said there was only one police officer at the police post who told him to come back the following day so that he could record a statement.
Speaking at Kianyaga police station, Mutero said he was shocked the following day after he received a call from police officers notifying him that his son had died.
He allegedly died while at Kianyaga Sub-county hospital where he was allegedly taken after complaining of being unwell.
Mutero’s family is living in fear after villagers and neighbors who are accusing them of being behind their son’s death.
“Neighbors are not planning to join in the burial preparations saying that we planned for the death of our son for beating his mother which is not true,” Mutero said.
The deceased’s body has been moved to Kibugi funeral home awaiting postmortem.
