Kilifi county loses KES 35 million monthly to illegal water connections
Kilifi County loses KES 35 million every month due to unauthorised water connections.
According to Kilifi Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company Limited (KIMAWASCO), 46% of the water obtained from the Coast Water Works Development Agency is unaccounted for.
Hezekiah Mwarua, Managing Director of KIMAWASCO, stated that the company collects KES 40 million every month.
Mwaura was speaking to the media at the Cereal Board Village in Kilifi town as part of an operation to crack down on illegal water connections in homesteads.
He noted that the company is employing a piece of new equipment that can find pipes and detect leakage systems.
They have already nabbed more than eight instances of illegal water connections and are discussing with the company counsel and police officers so that the perpetrators can be detained, and charged with economic sabotage.
He urged the county administration and residents to report the people behind the unlawful activity, stating that they will not spare anyone, even their own police, who may have colluded with the locals to do such business.
He stated that the operation will begin in Kilifi town and its environs in two weeks and will then be expanded to the important towns of Mtwapa, Mariakani, Mazerus, and Kaloleni.
KIMAWASCO Board of Directors Charman Rashid Mkwana stated that they have granted amnesty to individuals who have unlawfully connected water to surrender and disconnect the water before they arrive.
Mkwana stated that when there is a water shortage owing to unpaid electrical bills, Kilifi residents are the first to complain, then Kenya Power disconnects the water supply in Baricho.
He claims that the majority of individuals in Kilifi town can pay their water bills, but they are also the ones who conduct illicit water connections.
