Kidero gets waiver in Sh427M tax dispute after an out of court settlement with KRA
Former Nairobi Governor Evans Odiambo Kidero has gotten a waiver in the Sh427 million tax arrears dispute following an out-of-court settlement with the Kenya Revenue Authority.
KRA has allowed Kidero to pay Sh19 million instead of the disputed 427 million shillings tax.
The amount comprises of principal tax of Sh12 million, a penalty of 2.4 million and interest of Sh5 million.
Kidero had been ordered to pay tax amounting to Sh427,269,795.00 million.
The dispute dates back to 2016 when KRA conducted an audit of Kidero’s financial and business accounts for the income period of January 2011 to December 2015 and handed him a Sh680 million tax bill that included penalties and interests.
He challenged the taxation at the tax appeals tribunal, arguing that out of the money, Sh423 million was donations for campaigns.
However after the tribunal ruled in favor of Kidero, the taxman challenged the decision before the high court and the court ruled that he had no proof the money was from his campaign accounts and allowed the KRA to collect the disputed amount.
