KEPSA condemns destruction of businesses during protests
The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) has once again voiced concerns about the ongoing political unrest that has turned violent leading to the destruction of properties, particularly targeting businesses.
In a statement on Tuesday, KEPSA said the private sector, which is a significant economic driver, is losing about KES 3 billion daily due to the recent protests.
KEPSA noted that its members provide services to individuals from all backgrounds, regardless of their political affiliations, and must be protected from any political machinations.
The associations listed under KEPSA represent over a million corporates of all sizes from SMEs to multinationals, and an attack on them is an affront to Kenya’s national economic aspirations.
The organisation emphasised the significance of peaceful assembly and protests as means for individuals to express their concerns and complaints but firmly denounces the politicisation of private sector enterprises, which is causing businesses to incur losses and prompting some foreign investors to flee.
“We must protect jobs and revenue generated by all businesses for the sake of Kenya’s progress,” the statement read.
“Kenya has been a beacon of hope and peace in the region, continental and globally and the only African country to the United Nations headquarters among many other International organizations that contribute to jobs and revenue for the country and give Kenya a global status. This we can lose in a moment too,” said KEPSA.
KEPSA implored politicians to review their political stand and consider pursuing alternative dispute resolution measures outlined in the constitution as well as protect the rights of businesses to operate without fear of political retribution or violence. The organisation also calls upon law enforcement officials to uphold impartiality and ensure the equal protection of all citizens.
“As a private sector, we remain committed to the prosperity and development of our country, and we will continue to support initiatives that promote peace and stability,” KEPSA concludes in the statement.
“We believe that by working together, we can build a better Kenya for all its citizens.”
