Kenyans tell off CS Moses Kuria for celebrating supermarket discounts
Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria found himself facing the ire of Kenyans on social media X (formerly Twitter) after he posted photos of various discounted food items, including rice, cooking oil, sugar, and baby diapers, at a supermarket.
CS Kuria posted the photos on early Thursday, 7, September with the caption:”It’s Coming Down, Down Down Down.”
However, many Kenyans did not share his jubilation for the price drops. They pointed out that supermarkets regularly offer discounts and promotions to attract customers, and this was not indicative of a drop in cost of living.
“Bossman, Carrefour advertises weekly deals they’ve negotiated with brands. It’s a standard practice for merchants to promote such offers regularly. I don’t buy into this,” Chief Disruptor, an X user, noted.
Muhammad Onyango echoed this sentiment, stating, “Surely Moses! Carrefour has weekly promotions on selected items to boost sales. How can you equate this to a general reduction in the cost of goods and the government working for Wanjiku?”
Jackson didn’t mince words, declaring, “Stop playing with our emotions; it’s all a lie.”
Dr. Evans Richard expressed his disappointment with Moses, saying, “You are a disgrace. How can you visit a supermarket, take photos of their deals, and present them here as evidence of a reduction in the cost of living? Stop deceiving Kenyans.”
Charlie Charlie took a more direct approach, sharing another picture and challenging Kuria, “You want photos? We have photos to share.” He followed up by posting a photo showing the price of sugar as Sh510, suggesting that the cost of basic commodities remained high.
Brian Mtetezi directed his frustration at President William Ruto, questioning the state of affairs in the country. He remarked, “Now we have cabinet secretaries going to supermarkets to take photos of promotional items and sharing them on X to make it seem like they are working. I swear, it won’t end well with these people. I’m deeply dissatisfied. @WilliamsRuto, what is going on?”
In the face of rising living costs, another X user expressed their frustration, stating, “Prices may be ‘coming down,’ but it’s always for the benefit of the wealthy. Now I have to walk from Kawangware to 2 Rivers just to buy sugar at Sh399.”
Despite the skepticism expressed by some Kenyans, there was still a segment of the population that believed these offers could signal a potential decrease in food prices.
