Kenya Kwanza, a house divided
The seemingly weak house of the ruling UDA party within the Kenya Kwanza Alliance has a date with destiny on Tuesday 18 June when President William Ruto is expected to address a parliamentary group meeting in a bid to whip his party members into supporting the 2024 Finance Bill and cool the flaring temperatures within the party.
In recent weeks, battle lines have been increasingly drawn between President Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, directly or through their allies and proxies.
From the moment Gachagua claimed to have retreated to the mountain to pray and meditate, he returned a different man – emboldened and unafraid to expose the cracks in the country’s top leadership.
The apparent split in the presidency is no longer a secret, an open admission made by the DP’s confidant and fierce defender, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga. This is one of the issues expected to be discussed at a joint parliamentary group meeting at State House.
NTV has established that some MPs from the President’s party are ready to tell the Head of State the truth, starting with the Finance Bill, arguing that the proposals put them at loggerheads with their constituents because of the increased economic burden that will be imposed on Kenyans.
The real elephant in the room, however, will be the power struggles in Kenya Kwanza that have created factions within the party pitting the president and the deputy against each other – either directly or through proxies.
The meeting is likely to produce some fireworks as the divisions move from secret to public boxing matches.
