Kenya, Algeria MPs to explore fitting laws to boost trade ties

Members of Parliament from Kenya and Algeria have pledged to explore legislation that will facilitate trade among the two countries.

The MPs made this pledge during the inaugural meeting of the Kenya-Algeria parliamentary group on Tuesday in Algiers.

The meeting, which was attended by members of both countries’ friendship caucuses, was intended to familiarize members with each other in preparation for direct engagements at the parliamentary level. The MPs agreed to look into ways to develop legislation that would benefit both countries.

Messaoudi Amor, Vice-President of the Algeria Friendship Group, welcomed his Kenyan counterparts and stated that they were ready to strengthen their collaboration for the benefit of Africa’s growth and development. He stated that they were aware of their Speakers’ discussions on strengthening bilateral engagements and were prepared to implement their decisions.

“We are aware that our two presidents of the Assembly and the Senate have met over strengthening bilateral engagements with your Speaker and we are ready to implement their decisions”, said Messaoudi.

Nanok Daniel, Chair of the Friendship Group in the National Assembly, thanked their hosts for their warm gestures and stated that they, too, agreed on strengthening bilateral and parliamentary relations between the two countries. He stated that they were ready and willing to work on issues that would benefit the development of their two countries.

“We are ready and willing to engage on issues that will boost the development of our two nations. We shall consult among each other to come up with a specific programme of activities on how to engage on areas of trade, education, technology, engineering, agriculture, pharmaceutical among other areas of interest,” said Nanok.

Kenya and Algeria have diplomatic relations since 1963, but trade between the two countries has been limited. Algeria exported $147k in goods to Kenya in 2020, primarily hydrogen, confectionery sugar, and tropical fruits. In early 2015, Kenya also established an embassy in Algiers.

The MPs stated that they would consult with one another to develop a specific program of activities to promote cooperation in various sectors such as agriculture, energy, tourism, and education.

Kenya’s delegation, led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, is in Algeria for official duties.
