Kenya’s Defence Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has announced that the last contingent of Kenyan (Kenya Defence Forces) troops operating under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) will complete their withdrawal by December 31, 2024.
In previous years, an ATMIS contingent serves for a period of one year before another takes over.
Earlier this year, Brig. William Kamoiro officially took over from Brig. Jattani Gula as the commander of the Kenya Defence Forces contingent serving with the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Duale’s notice comes six months after ATMIS marked its first anniversary with a renewed commitment to support Somalia’s stability process.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, during its one-year anniversary, expressed his appreciation for the contribution of ATMIS Troops and Police Contributing Countries. Mohamed commended the military, police, and civilian units for their commitment to restoring peace and stability in Somalia.
