KANU suspends Nick Salat as party Secretary General

Kenya African National Union (KANU) has suspended its  Secretary-General Nicholas Salat over several complaints on his conduct and violation of the party constitution.

The decision was arrived at by KANU’s National Executive Council (NEC) in a meeting today, December 15.

In a letter addressed to Salat, party chairperson Gideon Moi says, “You be and are hereby suspended forthwith from carrying out and/or performing your duties as the Party’s Secretary General pending the determination of the disciplinary proceedings.”

He added that the matter has been referred to the Disciplinary Committee as provided by the law.

According to the party chairperson, disciplinary proceedings are expected to be heard and determined within 30 days.

Salat’s suspension comes after a fallout between him and Gideon Moi over the scramble for the available East African Legislative Assembly slots in the Azimio camp last month.

When Gideon Moi met with party officials and elected leaders a week ago, he indicated his intention to oust Salat.

Salat was glaringly absent from the party chairman’s images.

Salat said last month that the chairman has personalised the once thriving party, driving it to the ground.

“Just because he withdrew his name does it mean the party must go down with him?” he questioned, adding that the party is so personalised that if his interests are not aligned then it is the end.

Nevertheless, Salat vowed to confront him head-on and stated that he will not permit the party to disintegrate as a result of poor leadership.

“We feel as true believers of this great party we should not allow things to go on like this and that we are going to make things work right,” he said.

Salat ran unsuccessfully for the Bomet County senate seat in 2013 and 2017. President Uhuru Kenyatta named him as Chairperson of the Agriculture Development Corporation in August 2020.

In the Senate campaign, he was defeated in 2013 by Prof Wilfred Lessan of the now-defunct United Republican Party (URP) and again in 2017 by outgoing Senator Christopher Langat (Jubilee).

Salat, however, stepped down in the 2022 elections to run for the Bomet East parliamentary seat, which he held from 2002 to 2007.
