Kaloleni MP asks international community to intervene and quell tension witnessed from protests
Kaloleni member of parliament Paul Katana now wants the international community to intervene and quell the tension witnessed in the country arising from the mass anti-government protests led by leaders of the opposition.
Katana says the United States government should be at the forefront in calling for a truce between president William Ruto and Raila Odinga the leader of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party, and not issuing travel advisories.
“I am appealing on the foreign missions in the country in particular the US embassy. It is an irony they have been so quick in lecturing us about human rights but since the demonstration started, people have lost property, mosques and churches have been burnt yet the US embassy has been silent,” said Katana
Maintaining that the US has a big role in ensuring there is peace and stability in the country.
“The US should have by now called for a truce between president William Ruto and Raila Odinga and asked the two leaders to sit down and find a common ground. It is only dialogue that can resolve the problems we are facing in the country,” he added.
The legislator defended dialogue saying that it is not a push for the handshake between the two leaders but only for the sake of peace. Katana said that the duo has a history of working together, at the same time laying blame on handlers from both divides for maintaining a hard stance that has disgruntled efforts for a ceasefire.
At the same time, he called for investigations to be conducted on the invasion of a farm in Ruiru sub-county, which is linked to the family of former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
During the Monday, March 27, incident, over 100 intruders invaded the Northlands farm located along the Eastern Bypass looting properties worth millions of shillings.
“Calling people to invade other people’s property is a crime and the law should take its cause. I am asking the Inspector General of police to investigate leaders who have been giving inflammatory statements and inciting Kenyans to invade other people’s property,” he said.
He also noted that the issue of land is an emotive issue, asking leaders to desist from misleading Kenyans. Katana gave an example of how the coastal community has suffered historical land injustices, losing hundreds of thousands of acres of land.
“If I as a national leader call on the people whom I know have been deprived of their land? This is a recipe for chaos and we should condemn it with the strongest terms possible and action should be taken against whoever made this statement.”
The Mp also called on Kenyans to embrace peace even when holding demonstrations, while condemning the chaos in Kibera slums that led to the razing down of a mosque and church during the Monday drama.
