Kakamega teen treks for 15 kilometers to join form one

A 13-year-old girl, Diana Nyarotso from Butere pulled a surprise during the form one admissions at St Mary’s Girls High School in Mumias when she appeared at the institution on foot, having trekked for more than 15 kilometers.

The girl dressed in Ebulafu Primary School uniform, her previous school, carried an envelope containing the calling letter and a result slip of her KCPE performance.

Upon questioning,  the teenager told the school’s principal Monicah Muchihi that she had walked from her home in Butere to the school located in Mumias sub county since her parents could not afford the Sh150 for bus fare.

The black shoes she wore were covered in dust perhaps depicting the length of the distance she had traveled to reach her destination.

“I learned at Ebulafu primary school where I scored 375 marks in my KCPE and was called to join St Mary’s Grls High School. But my father died in 2012 and my mother is ailing and unable to cater for my school fees. That is why I woke up early in the morning and set out on foot to come and plead to the principal of to accept and admit me in Form One. I am determined to learn and become a lawyer so that I can assist the weak in the community,” she said.

Ms Buchichi said she was shocked when the girl approached her without any belonging but seeking to be admitted in the school.

“When I inquired more from her, I learned that she is from a very humble background and I got touched with her story. I have nothing else to do but admit her and mobilise resources to equip her with the entire requirement she needs in school,” said Ms Buchichi.

The principal appealed to well wishers to come to the rescue of the bright students who are likely to miss out on their secondary school education due to lack of school fees.

The school was allocated 485 students in Form One by the Ministry of Education with more than 500 requests for admission.

“We have been forced to turn down most of the requests due to unavailable facilities, especially in the boarding section. Already, we had more than 500 admissions on the first day and we expect this number to swell as days go by,” explained the school principal.

At the neighbouring St Peter’s boys high school, the school principal Mr Chrispinus Owino said they will be forced to convert the school’s multi-purpose hall into a dormitory to accommodate the soaring number of admissions.

St Peter’s boys’ was allocated 677 Form One slots and on the first day of admissions, over 450 students had reported to school.

“We are so challenged by boarding facilities and want support from the Ministry of Education so that we can increase boarding facilities and classrooms to accommodate the number of students that has now passed 2630,” said Mr Owino.

More than 12 students were admitted at St Peter’s without school fees as the increasing poverty levels continue to affect most families in the country.

At Lubinu boys’ high school in Mumias East, three students were not able to raise money for shopping and school fees.

The school principal Conrad Wanjala said the boys were admitted in the school while their parents were given three weeks to look for money to cushion their sons in school.

The school was allocated 480 students by the Ministry and had received more than 600 requests for admission.

Mr Wanjala said the school shall not admit all the students who requested to join the school due to limited boarding and tuition facilities.

“We are forced to appeal to the Ministry of Education to make early disbursement of the learning capitation to help us manage the students in schools. Prices of commodities have gone high yet parents are not remitting school fees as required and this will make the management of schools very difficult,” said Mr Wanjala.

Besides the need to expand boarding and tuition facilities in schools, the teachers also want the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to post more teachers to curb the biting shortage of tutors in public schools.
