Jowie’s mother speaks after son is sentenced to death
Standing before a battery of journalists and flanked by her son’s lawyer minutes after the High Court sentencing, the mother of Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu spoke of her son with the confidence of a mother referring to a toddler still under her tender care.
Anastacia Thama maintained that her son, Jowie Irungu, 33, was innocent, even as the words of Justice Grace Nzioka sealed his fate.
Under normal circumstances, Mrs Thama would have been expected to faint or weep after Jowie was sentenced to death, but that was not to be. She was strong, courageous and unflinching.
Jowie was sentenced to death on Wednesday after being found guilty of murdering businesswoman Monica Nyawira Kimani on 19 September 2018.
The late Monica was murdered at her Lamuria Garden apartment shortly after arriving from Juba in South Sudan.
Mrs Thama, looking brave and strong under a cloud of adversity, beamed with confidence that Jowie would one day taste freedom. However long it will take, she asserted that nothing is impossible before God.
She compared her son’s ordeal to that of Joseph, who was sold by his brothers and found favour in Pharaoh’s kingdom.
“I believe my son is innocent and has made no mistake, he has not killed anyone. I believe there is a God of second chances and that is why you can see I have strength,” she said with great composure.
“He is like Joseph who was mistreated and God saved him. I believe the same God will save my son in his own time,” she added.
On the other hand, Monica’s brother George Kimani said justice had finally been done and they would now let the matter rest.
“It was very difficult and sometimes we felt like losing, but I think we gathered courage. We are satisfied with judgement and now what we are looking at is how to move on,” said Kimani.
