Isiolo leaders accuse KDF officers of harassment, plotting to evict locals to expand training bases

Leaders in Isiolo County have accused military officers of harassment to their host communities in the protracted row to evict locals from their ancestral land, in a bid to expand training bases for soldiers.

Speaking on Friday during the Mashujaa Day fete at the Isiolo Police Grounds, County Deputy Governor James Lowasa said that the military officers were going against the law by directly engaging civilians, intimidating them with threats of demolishing their houses.

Lowasa said harassment by the military has persevered even after the Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale recently assured locals that the land tussle with the Kenya Defence Forces was being resolved through Presidential intervention.

Isiolo County plays host to at least Four Military installations, namely the Seventy-eigth Tank Batallion, The School of Infantry (SOI), The School of Artillery (SOA), and the School of Combat Engineering (SOCE), with residents accusing the soldiers of forcefully shifting the boundary to the land they were allocated by community elders to set up their camps.

Lowasa noted that government arrangements involving the military ought to be communicated through the office of the county commissioner, not soldiers engaging locals directly issuing threats of demolishing their houses.

Burat ward MCA Nicholas Lorot said that the locals would not be obliged to vacate their ancestral land where they have buried their loved ones for decades, adding that the military officers must stick to the parcel of land that they currently occupy and seek extra land for their training elsewhere within the vast county, instead of trying to forcefully evict the same host communities that gave them the land.

Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding issued a warning to members of the public who have grabbed public/govt land, urging them to forfeit the land or risk facing forceful eviction and demolitions similar to what was witnessed in Mavoko earlier this week.

Omoding noted that he gave a similar warning to Mavoko residents when he was the area Deputy County Commissioner, with some heeding his advice. At the same time, he said, some ignored it and have now incurred losses following the demolition of their property.

He said that corruption involving cartels in the land sector has seen some people occupy government land irregularly, but warned that the land will be reverted back to the government at some point.

Regarding the national examinations where candidates are expected to sit for the exams next week, the County Commissioner noted that as part of preparedness for the impending El Nino rains, the County administrators and Ministry of Education have identified at least five schools that could have a major challenge due to expected flooding and have therefore set aside other institutions that will act as exam centers for the candidates.

Candidates who have registered to sit for their exams at Aremiet Primary School will now shift to Kiwanja Pry Sch, those from Aremiet Secondary School will relocate to Bula Mpya Secondary School, those from Gambela Pry Sch will move to Ramadhan Pry Sch, while those from Gotu Pry Sch will sit for their exams at Wabera Pry Sch.

Omoding also appealed to members of the public to take part in the fight against drug and substance abuse, by working closely with the government administration and the police, through volunteering information for appropriate action.
