Isiolo confirms two cholera cases bans food hawking
The Isiolo County Department of health services has banned the hawking of food in Isiolo town and its environs indefinitely, following the confirmation of two cases of cholera disease.
According to County Deputy Governor James Lowasa, who also serves as the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of health services, the ban was enacted to prevent the spread of the disease because there was a high risk of contaminated food being sold in unsanitary conditions, particularly along town streets.
Lowasa stated that the first person affected was from Maisha bora hamlet on the outskirts of Isiolo town and was treated and discharged from the County Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Another person suspected of being infected had his specimen test come back positive after being discharged from the outpatient wing, requiring public health officers to track him down to his home, where he was quarantined and treated, and family members close to him were placed on prophylaxis treatment (prevention). All of the other people suspected of being contaminated had their tests come out negative.
Lowasa, who is also a doctor, urged the public to practise good hygiene by boiling drinking water and thoroughly washing their hands, especially after using the latrines and before preparing or eating meals.
He also directed the Isiolo Water and Sanitation Company (IWASCO) to ensure proper treatment of Water before it is supplied to homesteads.
Lowasa appealed to members of the public with diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration symptoms to visit the nearest health center for early check-ups and treatment.
He however noted that the County Department of health was well prepared to handle the cholera outbreak, having been on a red alert since the first cholera cases were confirmed in the neighboring County of Meru last week.
He warned that with the rainy season already with us, the risk of the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera was very high due to the presence of storm water, urging members of the public to observe proper hygiene and waste management so that they are not infected.
Traders affected are mainly those who sell already cooked food along the roads and town streets, such as those hawking boiled eggs, samosas, sausages, githeri, mutura, and those roasting maize.
