Inside Ruto’s crisis talks as UDA postpones city polls
President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has postponed its Nairobi County-level elections amid reports of intense wrangles between Governor Johnson Sakaja and Embakasi North MP James Gakuya.
The development happened just hours before President Ruto chaired the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to deliberate on a myriad of issues affecting the ruling party, including a petition seeking the ouster of Secretary General Cleophas Malala over claims of abuse of office.
Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who had accompanied deputy president Rigathi Gachagua to Kipkok Primary School, Sigowet-Soin Constituency, Kericho County for a fundraiser, confirmed the meeting, but rejected claims that it was a crisis talks.
Accompanied by host governor Eric Mutai, the leaders downplayed the reason for calling the meeting, insisting that it had been planned long ago to discuss the ongoing UDA grassroots elections.
However, despite the assertions by the DP and Senator Cheriyuot, this is the first meeting since the roll out of the party polls and the unsettling remarks by the second in command on the revenue sharing formula.
“This meeting that the DP is rushing to attend and I am also attending, we are going to get update on the elections in the five counties,” revealed the Kericho senator. Postponing the Nairobi elections, UDA National Elections Board (NEB) said the decision was based on an order by the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal, and a new date will be announced later.
Mr Gakuya is backed by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the elections that have turned into a battle between the second-in-command and Governor Sakaja. According to insiders, the delay is meant to buy time to ensure the political temperatures building do not get out of hand.
Already, it is reported that both candidates had reached out to their supporters, with some even booked in hotels to keep them away from being reached by the opponents.
