IEBC Update: 9 Points from Wafula Chebukati’s Press Briefing
As results trickle in for the recently concluded general election, these are the latest updates from Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati’s press briefing at 2.20pm on 10, August, 2022:
1. Voter turnout
Of the 22,120,458 registered voters, 14.1 million Kenyans voted on 9 August, 2022 as per KIEMS kit data – representing a 65.4% voter turnout.
2. Official results
Results at polling stations filed by presiding officers, on Forms 34A, to the IEBC portal are final.
3. Voting in Eldas
Elections in Eldas constituency, Wajir county, were adjourned due to security reasons, voting commenced at 6am today.
4. Voting in Garsen
Voting at Didaade Primary School in Garsen constituency commenced today and the commission authorised the use of the manual register for the 569 registered voters.
5. Results transmission
Results transmission of forms 34A is currently at 97.65%. The electoral body has so far transmitted from 45,141 polling stations out of 46, 229 polling stations.
6. Wrong form
Form 34A from Rakwaro market polling station, Rongo constituency in Migori county was erroneously transmitted to the presidential results portal. The commission to await the original form 34A from the returning officer, validate it with the presidential agent and thereafter replace the said image in the portal once the validation is completed.
7. Incomplete forms
Two incomplete forms 34B from Ainakboi constituency, Uasin Gishu county and Saboti constituency in Trans Nzoia county were erroneously uploaded in the commission’s portal. Returning officers for the respective constituencies will upload the correct and complete forms 34B upon signing by the returning officer and the respective agents at the constituencies’ tallying centres.
8. Presidential results announcement
Presidential results will not be announced today citing the 7-day window provided by law to declare the president-elect after polling closes. He said the commission was yet to receive the physical forms 34A from polling stations around the country but expect to receive them later in the day.
9. Kimilili shooting
On Kimilili shooting where former Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa is a prime suspect, IEBC Chair said counting will go on as scheduled and a winner to be announced as investigations are conducted. Matter to be handled by the police.
