IEBC official meets Bungoma Senate aspirants
Bungoma County Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) boss Grace Rono on Monday met eleven contestants for the senatorial race with their agents ahead of the poll.
Rono promised the 11 aspirants a fair electoral process.
The meeting comes three days before the election as allegations of favoritism by IEBC to certain political formations and marked ballots being spotted went rife.
“The ballots just got in today and the candidates are free to inspect the ballot papers to ensure their names and signatures of the party they are vying on are in order,” she said.
“We are set for the day and urge the people of Bungoma to turn out in large numbers and elect a candidate of their choice as we will deliver a credible election.”
Asked whether her officers were indeed favouring certain candidates in the race Rono said “there is no formal complaint tabled” to her and she couldn’t respond to it.
Independent candidates in the race complained they and their agents were being mistreated by Commission but were later on assured during the sit-in that no favoritism was there.
Wafula Wamunyinyi of Azimio la Umoja, Wafula Wakoli (Ford-Kenya) and Mwambu Mabonga (UDA) have been the most visible in the campaigns.
The eight others include Elias Barasa who is vying for the People’s Empowerment Party and Enock Opara, Julius Masinde and Radon Munoko who are independent.
Others are Dr Fredrick Busolo of Vibrant Democracy Party, Aaron Wafula (Republican Liberty Party), Geofrey Barasa (National Ordinary People Empowerment Union) and Robert Sifuna (Roots Party of Kenya).
There are 1,373 polling stations in Bungoma and the votes will be counted at the county tallying center at Mabanga.
“We just hope that IEBC will not be professional so they redeem their repute which was soiled in the August polls where its officials were accused of meeting politicians before the elections,”
