I have no blood on my hands – President Ruto
President William Ruto yesterday absolved himself of any culpability in the recent spate of killings of people by police during the countrywide protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
He said this in an interview with Kenya’s media houses on Sunday evening, where he maintained that he was not to blame for the unprecedented events in the country that claimed the lives of 19 people.
While the Head of State said it was unfortunate that lives were lost in the melee, he stressed that the country also suffered losses to the tune of Sh2.4 billion during the demonstrations that were largely peaceful but eventually turned chaotic last Tuesday.
Dr Ruto said Parliament, the Supreme Court, especially the Chief Justice’s office and City Hall were badly damaged in the wave of violence that engulfed the protests against the Finance Bill.
“I have no blood on my hands. Nineteen people, according to the records I have, are dead. Very unfortunate, as a democracy, that should not be part of our conversation. Sh2.4 billion of property has been destroyed,” he said.
Upon being sworn in, President Ruto vowed that his government would put an end to extrajudicial killings in Kenya and said that plan was still on track, admitting that the deaths of Kenyans at the hands of police were unfortunate.
“Every life that is lost is something that must concern everybody, starting with me. It is true that children got into situations where they became victims of the demonstrations,” he said.
President Ruto was also categorical that it was not the protesting Gen Zs who entered Parliament and set part of it ablaze, but some criminal elements who took advantage of their peaceful demonstration to desecrate August House.
The president also said that all police officers sent to quell the chaos that followed the anti-finance bill march would be held accountable for their actions during the protests.
