I am ready for you, Alice Wahome warns cartels as she takes over lands ministry

Incoming Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Developments, Alice Wahome officially took up her new role on Thursday with a resounding warning to lands cartels.

The Minister at the same time handed over to the Cabinet Secretary Zacharia Njeru who succeeded her as the new Water CS in a ceremony held at Ardhi House in Nairobi.

The CS categorically stated that she would not allow cartels that have plagued the Ministry for decades to derail her work.

“I am very prepared for those cartels. I do not know whether those cartels are in this room or whether those cartels are outside the gate. I do not know whether they are in the public or whether it is a phantom,” said CS Wahome.

Wahome reiterated that she is ready to tackle cartels head-on in whatever form they come and that she will spare nobody in her quest to streamline the sector and serve Kenyans.

“But what I know is that Kenyans are looking forward for performance in this Ministry, they are looking forward to service delivery, and that is what I would want to promise.”

The Lands Minister stated that, “so anybody on our way as a team, anybody who will create the block we shall have to push the block so that we can reach our…whatever name you call yourself.”

On his part, CS Njeru said that he will give priority to the issue of water scarcity in his new docket.

The Water Minister called for partnership from relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the government’s projects regarding building of dams to ensure Kenyans have adequate water.

Further, the outgoing Lands Minister expressed confidence in his track record in his previous docket citing various achievements such as the launch of 14 active sites in the housing project, currently underway and the development of the National Lands Index among others.

“For close to one year we have worked very well. There are milestones that we have achieved and it has been through teamwork,” CS Njeru said.

He applauded President William Ruto for linking the Lands and Housing state departments, and committed to play his role in fulfilling the government’s agenda on development.

“The President in his wisdom brought these three state departments together because you realise when you start working that the three state departments are inter-related. Housing cannot do without land when you come to land there some issue you also require from the other two state departments.”

CS Wahome and Njeru are among Ministers who have taken up their new dockets following the move to reshuffle Cabinet by President Ruto last week.

On Wednesday, Moses Kuria who is now the new CS for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management passed the baton to his successor Rebecca Miano to spearhead the Trade and Investments Ministry.

The Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei announced the changes on October 4 in which eight Cabinet Secretaries were affected.

Others include the new Tourism and Wildlife CS Alfred Mutua who has taken the helm from Peninah Malonza who was re-assigned to the East African Community, ASALs, and Regional Development docket.

Aisha Jumwa who previously served as the Chief Administrative Secretary for Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action has taken over the CS for Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage.

In the changes, the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s office was added responsibilities to include Foreign and Diaspora Affairs formerly led by CS Mutua.
